How to Prevent & Correct Your Top 5 Skin Concerns

From acne to sun damage, if you’re like many adults, the skin concerns you thought you’d leave behind in adolescence are still on your mind.

But don’t worry! Here are a few tips on how to prevent recurring damage and correct any existing skin concerns.

Tips for Preventing & Correcting Common Skin Concerns

Your skin is exposed to the elements at all times. That’s why it’s important to take precautions to prevent skin damage, but there’s still plenty you can do to recover from past mistakes.

1. Sun Spots

You already know the first step in preventing any sun-related damage, but we’ll say it anyway… WEAR SUNSCREEN. The easiest way to do this is to find a moisturizer that contains SPF 30. Even when you take proper precautions, tests like a DermaScan can reveal sun damage you wouldn’t see with the naked eye. Every small prevention step helps!

To correct signs of sun damage, try a moisturizer that contains a retinoid and an alpha hydroxy acid to help fight signs of aging while minimizing irritation.

2. Acne

If you were under the impression your only reminder of pimples as an adult would be your middle school photos, think again. According to the International Dermal Institute, at least 55 percent of adults ages 20-40 experience consistent acne.

One of the top skin concerns related to acne? Scarring. To treat existing scars, exfoliate the face two to three times a week and consider using a skin balancing face oil to hydrate.

To prevent future outbreaks, be sure to wash your face morning and night — especially if you wear makeup or workout. Consider using an over-the-counter topical treatment to eradicate pimples as they pop up. See a dermatologist for more intense prevention methods like Accutane, which require regular blood work to monitor liver function and other side effects.

3. Psoriasis

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disorder that typically exhibits such symptoms as patches of dry, red skin, itchiness and small spots or bumps. There is currently no cure, but there are a few ways to minimize symptoms:

  • Use gentle skincare products that don’t contain fragrances, dyes or harsh exfoliants
  • Avoid any known triggers, which may include stress, infection and certain medications
  • Talk to your dermatologist to develop a treatment plan that fits your needs

4. Dark Circles

Men and women alike often resent dark undereye circles, which can be caused by genetics, poor sleep habits, sun exposure, and the natural aging process. To help brighten dark circles, use a daily eye cream that contains ingredients like a neuro-calming peptide, vitamin C and caffeine.

5. Redness

Facial redness may be caused by a chronic condition called rosacea, as well as broken capillaries and allergic skin reactions. If redness is often one of your top skin concerns, you likely have sensitive skin. Using skin care products without harsh exfoliants, preservatives, fragrances, and dyes can go a long way in preventing redness. A green-tinted moisturizer may also be helpful for reducing the appearance of redness.

If you do suffer from rosacea, talk to your dermatologist to discuss professional treatment options and how to avoid the specific triggers that lead to your flare-ups.

When it comes to skin concerns, your best bet is always to see a dermatologist. They’ll be able to work with you to identify, prevent and monitor any ongoing issues so you can have the skin you always dreamed of as an adult.
