6 Ways to Practice Self-Care in Under 30 Minutes a Day

In 2015, Millennials spent a whopping $10 billion on self-care products, and more members of Gen Y report committing to personal improvement than any generation before them. Despite their reputation as self-centered and shallow, this avocado-toast-loving generation could be onto something.

Self-care tends to improve immunity, increase positive thinking and make us less susceptible to stress, depression, anxiety, and other emotional health issues.

How to Practice Self-Care in Under 30 Minutes a Day

The concept of self-care is all about breaking through the day-to-day noise that surrounds us all. Bringing intention and mindfulness to a busy or routine moment can help with stress management and your ability to cope with overwhelming feelings.

The great news is starting a self-care routine doesn’t have to be difficult. Incorporate just one of these activities each day to start feeling the benefits!

1. Read

Whether it’s the newspaper, a blog or a magazine, spend some time reading something that brings you joy.

2. Meditate

Harness the power of silence with a little meditation. Try the free “Stop, Breathe & Think” app available for iPhone and Android for guided meditations as short as 4 minutes.

3. Eat Mindfully

Rather than working or watching TV during meals, use that time to savor your food and thoughts. Light a candle, play some music… whatever centers you in the moment.

4. Exercise

Working out is a great way to refocus and find your center. As long as exercise feels like a choice and not an obligation, your sweat sessions are great for your self-care routine!

5. Write

Writing in a journal can help you decompress after a long day. If you can’t commit to writing full pages regularly, try jotting down a few things you’re thankful for each day, or even just random thoughts.

6. Focus on You

Maybe you like cooking, mowing the lawn, a sport, baths, yoga… focus on making time for whatever it is YOU enjoy!

Many people associate a “treat yourself” mentality with self-care. But the reality is anything that brings you joy and breaks up your usual routine will do wonders to improve your mood, help you manage stress, and boost your ability to shake off tough situations.

What do you do to show yourself a little love? Let us know in the comments!
